A few of EMD’s novels are still in print.
Diary of a Provincial Lady is available in editions from Penguin, Virago, Pan Macmillan* and Persephone. Not all editions include all four Provincial Lady novels, so do check.
*Tension** has been republished by the British Library in its Women Writers series.
Consequences has been republished by Persephone.
The Bloomsbury Reader series has good quality print-on-demand copies available of *Thank Heaven Fasting, *The Way Things Are, *Faster! Faster!**, No One Now Will Know* and *Late and Soon. There are various other print-on-demand facsimile reprints around, but the quality is variable.
This ebook from Delphi Press includes a large number of EMD’s novels and non-fiction, plus the play To See Ourselves and the extremely rare People You Love.
Finally, various online archives and repositories have free access to some of EMD’s works:
Project Gutenberg (Consequences, The War-workers, Messalina of the Suburbs, The Optimist);
Internet Archive includes a wide range of titles, some to borrow and others to download. My critical edition of The War-workers is now available there, since the closure of its publisher Victorian Secrets;
The Hathi Trust has several Delafield titles, but downloads are limited to Hathi Trust members.
There is one full-length biography of E.M. Delafield: Violet Powell’s The Life of a Provincial Lady (1988), authorised by Delafield’s daughter Rosamund Dashwood and drawing extensively on her recollections of her mother, as well as those friends still living at the time of its writing. Maurice McCullen’s 1985 study of Delafield contains significant biographical information and also benefited from Rosamund Dashwood’s input. Both books are now out of print, but there are secondhand copies of the Powell biography out there; McCullen’s book can be borrowed from the Internet Archive using the link below.
